placed at as much disadvantage at the stud by not having mares to suit him, as he was on the turf by being run out of his course. A precisely similar hypothesis may be formed in the case of the slow mare I have instanced. Here, then, are difficulties which, if superficially looked at, would seem to made breeding as happy-go-lucky an affair as if we make our selections of mares and stallions blindfolded. That it is not so, or, at any rate, need not necessarily be so, I think I have abundantly and conclusively demonstrated.

There is another thins". All trainers do not follow the same system with their horses. Now, it would seem apparent that only one way can be the right way, and that, therefore, all other ways must be wrong ways. Hence follows, doubtless, the very different performances of a horse when in the hands of different trainers. Much the same might be advanced with regard to jockeys ; and, in saying this, I intend to pass no individual reflections either on them or on trainers. But the fact remains that, in consequence of the capriciousness of methods employed, public running is little better than a farce, so far as it may be held to demonstrate the relative capabilities of horses. For they, like men, often 'gain a reputation without merit, and lose it without deserving.'

Perhaps an example from my own knowledge may serve to illustrate what I have just advanced.
